A celebration of the power of books

Books are like a window onto another world ¨C with each new page, they introduce us to new people, new cultures and new ideas. Every year, on 23 April, UNESCO celebrates  to recognize the power of books as a bridge between generations and across cultures. 

This date holds immense symbolism in world literature, marking the death of several renowned authors, including William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

Literacy through multilingualism

Multilingual books play a key role in literacy ¨C children learn to read and write best in their mother tongue. UNESCO advocates for multilingual learning materials to improve learning outcomes.

What makes us human?

As part of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022¨C2032, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ partnered with international publishers to release the children¡¯s book "What Makes Us Human", by Victor D.O. Santos and Anna Forlati, in over 30 languages.

Books, in all their forms, allow us to learn and to keep ourselves informed. They also entertain us and help us to understand the world, while offering a window into otherness.

For books to be able to unleash their full potential, it is essential that they reflect the linguistic diversity of our world. That is why, as part of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL), launched in 2022, UNESCO is supporting the publication of books in both Indigenous and regional languages.
