The Cacique Lempira Se?or de las Monta?as Biosphere Reserve is located in the western part of the country that includes the Monta?a de Celaque National Park The reserve proposal has an ecosystem of cloud forest and mixed forest pineoak Part of the area has a highland landscape where is situated the highest mountain of Honduras Cerro las Minas with 2849 meters high In total there are 153850 inhabitants mainly in the transition area where most of the population is rural and the agricultural sector represents 87 of the economy activity

The biosphere reserve covering 57810 ha is situated a few kilometers from the Nicaraguan border in the department of Choluteca It counts with a rich biological diversity including several species of endemic fauna The biosphere reserve contains 18 villages home to 26350 people The main economic activities are horticulture fruit and coffee production ornamental plant cultivation livestock breeding and milk production The area is also known for its saddlery products belts harnesses boots

Trifinio Fraternidad
The Trifinio Fraternidad transboundary biosphere reserve is a trinational biosphere reserve located between El Salvador Guatemala and Honduras It is the first transboundary biosphere reserve in Central America and represents a major contribution to implementation of the Mesoamerican Corridor It includes key biodiversity areas such as Montecristo National Park and a variety of forest ecosystems A key function of this mountain area is guaranteeing water supply for local communities It also plays an important role in regional development through the promotion of coffee activities conifer forest extraction and agrotourism This biosphere reserve has received strong support at high political levels viceministers of the three countries as well as the involvement of local communities in promoting sustainable development
