Presentation

Alwan wa Awtar, an NGO that offers artistic and non-formal educational activities, proposes to equip cultural professionals to conduct cultural projects with a strong developmental impact by: 1) raising the cultural practitioners’ awareness and understanding of sustainable development challenges; 2) developing innovative models; 3) enhancing the capacities of cultural practitioners to design and conduct community interventions; 4) opening the space for collaborations on culture for development actions.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

  • Addresses critical capacity development needs for the cultural and creative industries to contribute to sustainable development. The project will develop a new pedagogical tool and training programme to address a current need, namely, the preparation of cultural professionals for community development.

  • Widens participation in creation, production and distribution of cultural goods and services. The participants of the lab will be selected with a scoring system that advantages cultural practitioners with less access to capacity development. At least 33% of the participants will be from outside of Cairo, and at least 50% will be youths between 24 and 35 years old.

Main activities

  • Organize an eight-month learning lab for cultural professionals to raise their understanding of the role of culture in sustainable development, as well as to develop skills for implementing community actions.
  • Implement cultural actions developed by the participants of the learning lab that will target marginalized communities.
  • Document and disseminate learnings and insights of the project through partnerships with relevant cultural media.
