Education technology generates passionate debate. Is technology leading the way for equal access to education through open educational resources and online distance learning? or does it pose a grave threat by exacerbating existing inequalities – between and within countries?   Does technology offer countless opportunities or is it reducing opportunities, taking us down a technology-dependent trajectory where quality education is dependent on the ability of learners to engage in self-guided learning or artificial intelligence? Should technology-related, including digital, competencies be embedded in young children’s care and education, or should children be protected from technology for their cognitive, social and emotional development?

The discussion will be triggered by the presentation of the key messages of two recent UNESCO reports. The  which analyses the use of technology in education with the lenses of relevance, equity, scalability and sustainability and ?, which examines the numerous adverse and unintended consequences of the shift to ed-tech during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The presentations by Manos Antoninis, Director of the GEM Report and by Mark West, Project Officer at the Future of Learning and Innovation team at UNESCO, will be put in the EU perspective of international partnerships by colleagues from DG INTPA and DG EAC and followed by a Q&A session with the public.
