Workshop “Current Situation of Sudanese Museums and their Future Perspectives” in Khartoum, Sudan

On 9-10 July 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum Office, in partnership with the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities (MoCTA), and Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom), organized a workshop on Role of Museums in Developing Community Based Tourism (Vision and Challenges) in Grand Holiday Villa Hotel, Khartoum. The workshop attracted about 46 Sudanese museum professionals including 22 women and 12 participants from outside the Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis. The activity was honoured by H.E. Dr. Graham Abdelgadir, the Undersecretary in the MoCTA, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, UNESCO Representative to Sudan, Dr. Abdelgadir Noureddin, the Secretary General in the NatCom, and Dr. Abdelrahman Ali, the General Director of the NCAM, and other distinguished participants.
The opening session of the workshop included speeches from Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, who outlined the UNESCO ongoing work to develop Sudanese Culture sector; Dr. Abdelgadir Noureddin, who spoke about the role of museums in strengthening national identity and unity, and Dr. Abdelrahman Ali, who echoed on the importance of museums for the country.

The technical sessions of the workshop included presentation from Dr. Ghalia Garelnabi about the plans of the Sudan National Museum. Then, Dr. Ikhlas Abdullatif spoke about museum store management; Dr. Ghazafi Yousif – about current situation of museums’ inventories; and Mr. Sami Elamin – about digitalization of inventories. These themes were actively discussed by the participants.
During next day, Ms. Iglal Mohammed Osman spoke about conservation of museum collections; Dr. El-Tahir Adam – about collections of field stores of archaeological sites; Dr. Amani Noureldaim - about cultural relations with other institutions – national and international; Dr. Shaida Abdu – about new museum establishing; and Dr. Assad Abdelrahman – about ethnographic collections in Sudanese regional museums. The technical sessions were closed by a presentation of Mr. Ibrahim Abdelgabar and Mr. Mustafa El-Sarag on Financial Transparency.
During following general discussion, the Sudanese museum professionals brainstormed on how they can further develop and promote museums as cultural centers of appropriate societies, and tourist attractions for travelers. They thought about establishing “Museum’s Friends” associations and other mechanisms for increasing social value of their institutions. They requested possibilities to use museum’s revenues for further museum developments.

The closing session was addressed by H.E. Dr. Graham Abdelgadir, the Undersecretary in the MOCTA, who welcomed the partnership between UNESCO, Ministry and Sudanese NatCom, underlined the importance of museums in strengthening national identity and unity, and confirmed the Ministry’s will to establish at least one museum in each Sudanese state.
The workshop recommendations can be summarized as following:
- Developing and implementing new policies for NCAM including more authority for NCAM in states, and possibility to use generated income for financing the museum’s developments. Promoting innovations and creativity among NCAM’s staff.
- Developing for every museum a plan for improving its governance, which has to include promoting the museum in appropriate societies, making them tourist attractions, establishing networks of museum’s friends, strengthening creative approaches to increase museum’s capacities.
- Strengthening museum management, increasing quality of inventorying, actualizing museum’s expositions, actively going in the Internet, and making more publications about museums and their collections.
