UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Ahmed Yusuf Arabi in Sudan
I condemn the killing of Ahmed Yusuf Arabi and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Journalists and media workers are essential channels of information during a conflict and their safety must be ensured by all parties. I reiterate my call to respect UN Security Council Resolution 2222 unanimously adopted in 2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict, a status recently reaffirmed in the UN Pact for the Future.
Ahmed Yusuf Arabi worked in the city of Omdurman for the media Blue Nile TV Channel. He was reportedly killed by armed individuals in military uniform who raided his home and shot him.
