E-JUST/UNESCO Webinar on Museums and Sustainable Development in Egypt and Sudan
Under the banner of the ResiliArt debate?the?second Webinar on Heritage Science and Africa was held on 5 September 2020 Jointly organised by the EgyptJapan University of Science and Technology EJUST and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States the Webinar focused on Museums and Sustainable Development in Egypt and Sudan ? The Webinar began with the message of?Dr Wafaa Seed Ahmed?SecretaryGeneral of the Sudanese National Commission for UNESCO?Dr Ghaith Fariz?Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States?Dr Pavel Kroupkine?Head of the UNESCO Office in Khartoum and the EJUST as well?as Dr Abdelrazek Elnaggar?EJUST delivered the opening remarks ? Three museums associated with the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia 19601980 were also represented namely?Dr Ahmed Farouk Ghoneim Executive Director of? the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation NMEC in Cairo?Dr Hosni Abdelrehaim?Director of the Nubia Museum in Aswan and?Dr Ikhlas Abdellatif?Deputy Director of?the Sudan National Museum SNM in Khartoum They made presentations on the achievements progress and plan of their respective institutions ? Prof Ismail Al Fehail?Director of the House of Heritage in Sudan also made a presentation on the national strategy for the Intangible Cultural Heritage ICH safeguarding in Sudan that is under development ? The presentations by the experts in museum studies and management?Dr Okasha ElDaly?at the University College of London and?Dr Ilona Regulski?at the British Museum provided the international perspectives for the contribution of the museum sector to sustainable development ? The virtual discussions with eighty attendees including?fourtyeight women?facilitated by the EJUST moderator highlighted the importance of the multilateral cooperation framework for the safeguarding of the Nubian heritage and the development of the related museums to address continuing challenges? The communityfirst approach traditionally applied by the Egyptian museums attracted attention especially in this time when the tourism sector is recovering from the impact of the COVID19 The participants also learned the significance of the ICH safeguarding in culturally diverse Sudan its contribution to peace and prosperity and the role communitybased museums can play in ensuring community participation Digital Divide in Africa was identified as one of the issues that needs to be addressed urgently ? The next session of this Webinar series is planned for December 2020

Old Dongola Stakeholder’s Meeting, Sudan
On 1213 February 2021 the UNESCO Representative to Sudan HE Dr Pavel Kroupkine participated in the Old Dongolas Stakeholders Meeting which took place in the Polish House close to the Old Dongola archaeological site in Ad Dabbah locality The meeting was organized by the Polish Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw in cooperation with the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums NCAM In addition to the organizers the meeting was attended by the representatives of UNESCO Khartoum office QatarSudan Archaeological Project EU Delegation to Sudan Ministry of Tourism of the Northern state and local authorities HE Prof Intisar Elzein the Minister of Higher Education honoured the event ? ? UNESCO Old Dongola Stakeholders Meeting Local Sheikhs welcome the participants of the meeting Old Dongola Sudan 12022021 The objective of the meeting was to establish the incircle of friends of the historical archaeological site of Old Dongola for developing the site and the area The main outlines for the development Nominating Old Dongola as the World Heritage Site Organizing zonation conservation and preparation to a sitetourism activities developing a good site management plan for this Organizing touristattracting activities motivating a development of appropriate infrastructure and additional services creating a good site tourism strategy for this Promoting Old Dongola site in Sudan and abroad Building local people capacities to contribute to the development efforts in the area and to benefit from them ? ? UNESCO Old Dongola Stakeholders Meeting Site visit Old Dongola Sudan 12022021 The meeting started with the site visit which was followed by the presentation of Mr Peter Larsen Geneva the Heritage and Sustainable Development Strategy for Old Dongola ? ? Then the participants divide themselves in six groups to discuss the proposed outlines and next day to deliver the results of the group discussion to the common attention ? ? UNESCO Old Dongola Stakeholders Meeting Group discussion Old Dongola Sudan 12022021 ? Finally on 13 February 2021 the participants decided to join the nafeer for developing the area ? Old Dongola historical place in the Sudanese Nile Valley former capital of the medieval Nubian Kingdom of Makuria containing numerous traces of both Christian and Islamic periods of peoples life in medieval Nubia Old Dongola is listed as a Sudanese Heritage site in accordance with the UNESCO 1972 Convention ? Nafeer the Sudanese practice of joint works of all community members for common needs or for helping somebody to make something big house etc Nafir is listed as an element of the Sudanese Living Heritage Intangible Cultural Heritage in accordance with the UNESCO 2003 Convention

World Press Freedom Conference 2020 in Hague – Sudanese Margins
This year due to the COVID pandemic restrictions the annual World Press Freedom Conference WPFC was postponed from traditional time around 3 May and finally took place on 910 December 2020 in Hague Netherlands with significant remote component The Dutch Embassy and UNESCO Khartoum office decided to organize a side event with participation of those who registered to WPFC2020 however did not succeed to go to Hague The event was organized on 10 December 2020 in the UNESCO Khartoum office and included listening the presentations of the 2nd day of the Conference and discussing relevant issues such as Feedback on changing on media freedom in Sudan based on the results of the UNESCO survey among journalists and media experts The status of the Safety of Journalists in Sudan issues and how progress could be made Journalists dreams about the future of media in Sudan
