Strengthening National Capacities for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Sudan
On 27 February - 3 March 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum Office together with the Sudanese Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities (MoCTA), National Council for Cultural Heritage and Local Languages Development (NCCH) and National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom) organized a training workshop (TWS) on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) inventorying and documenting. The event took place in frameworks of the project 鈥淚CH Capacity Building in Sudan鈥, funded by the UAE, Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, on the premises of the Sudanese Heritage House, Khartoum 2. Resulting from the event 30 ICH professional from all states of Sudan were trained in ICH documenting and inventorying, including 11 women and 20 persons out of capital.
The objective of the workshop is to learn the methods and techniques of ICH inventorying and documenting. For practical exercises the organizers selected four different kinds of ICH, which have a good representation in some communities of Omdurman: pottery, Sudanese women toab, Nuba wrestling, and oral narratives and other performing arts of Western Sudan.
The opening session was honoured and addressed by H.E. Dr. Graham Abdelgadir, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, and H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan.
After the opening session, the participants passed training in theory of ICH Inventorying and Documenting, and did documenting exercises in different communities of Omdurman and Bahri.
On 3 March, the trainees evaluated their field missions, presented their findings and discussed the ways of ICH inventorying and documenting in Sudan.
