Restoring Livelihoods Through Culture in Yemen
On May 26 and 27 around one thousand people and over 20 speakers attended the twoday virtual conference by UNESCO and the EU Restoring Livelihoods Through Culture in Yemen to celebrate Yemens cultural heritage and restoration efforts ? The international event is held within the framework of the EU funded UNESCO project Cash for Work Promoting Livelihood Opportunities for Urban Youth in Yemen Launched in 2018 the project employs young Yemenis in heritage restoration and preservation while promoting social cohesion and resilience through cultural programming ? In our line of work if we change the life of one person we have achieved something said Anna Paolini UNESCO Representative To GCC and Yemen during the event The UNESCOEU cashforwork contributes to changing the lives of many ? As of May 2021 the project surveyed over 8000 historical buildings repaired 151 buildings and enrolled over 2500 young workers in Sanaa Aden Shibam and Zabid ? Among the four cities three are listed as World Heritage in Danger UNESCO and the EU cashforwork project is actively contributing to get them removed from the list said May Shaer Chief of the Arab States Unit at UNESCO ? The project also engaged over 500 youth in cashbased cultural programming and services organized consultative workshops for 50 culture operators disbursed small grants to eight cultural CSOs and distributed awarenessraising materials to 7M Yemenis

Launch of an online interactive map illustrating media development actors in Yemen
To enhance dialogue between actors working in media development in Yemen in January 2021 UNESCO and RNW Media conducted a research to identify and? map organizations working in the media development arena across the country? Humans of Taiz
In response to the second My Solution call launched by UNESCO GCC and Yemen office and RNW Media inviting young Yemenis to send their solutions to achieve peace in their country Humans of Taiz was among the 7 initiatives who submitted outstanding proposals which are selected and supported for further development ? Humans of Taiz launched in 2019 as a photography documentation project aims to capture images of people in Yemen without prejudice to gender race sect or color and to narrate their stories Through sharing the content on Facebook YouTube Instagram Twitter and on their blog the initiative aim to encourage unity within the society fragmented by the conflict by focusing on the individuals and their stories away from politics ? In relation to the My Solution activity Humans of Taiz opted to create an online awareness raising campaign using the same model adopted in their platform which includes sharing visuals and true stories of individuals to relay a powerful message to the audience The campaign which showcases the efforts of Yemeni women in contributing to peacebuilding includes videos written stories visual narratives and graphic designs The stories cover humanitarian topics such as the inclusion of those with special needs volunteering to support the orphans and cancer patients countering racial discrimination among other topics

Countering hate speech in Yemen : Dakkah initiative
Dakkh was among the selected winners for the second My Solution competition launched in April 2021 by UNESCO GCC and Yemen office and RNW Media which invited young Yemenis to send their solutions to achieve peace in their country The 7 winning proposals were supported to realize their projects Dakkh an initiative launched under the umbrella of the Yemen Hub for Media Support was founded in January 2021 with the aim to counter hate speech discourses in the media and society Through its different activities the initiative works on finding alternative discourses that restore the unity in the community As part of the My Solution project Dakkh first launched an online survey aiming to study the spread of hate speech in the society and ways to confront it The survey which included multiple choice and openended questions measures the level of understanding of the participants on hate speech and its impacts and captures qualitatively their opinions on ways to address this issue The survey plans to collect around 500 responses from all Yemeni governorates Subsequently to the data collection the information will be studied and the indepth analysis will be publicly shared in the form of a report Based on the survey findings Dakkh hopes to make recommendations on the best ways to address hate speech in the Yemeni society
