Get to know the Dashboard of Country Commitments and Actions
Dashboard officially launched at the SDG Action Weekend
One year after the historic Transforming Education Summit was convened by the UN Secretary-General — where 143 countries expressed their commitments to transform their education systems — the Dashboard of Country Commitments and Actions was officially launched on 17 September 2023, during the of the in New York, USA.
This new and interactive Dashboard is a monitoring and accountability tool to incentivize countries to translate their country commitments, expressed through National Statements of Commitments, into actions. However, there is more to the Dashboard than meets the eye.
Key features of the Dashboard
In this article, we present the Dashboard’s key features and how they can help track the progress of countries toward their Transforming Education commitments:
Displays all the thematic areas and sub-themes that countries prioritize. Out of the 143 statements, nine major themes and 37 sub-themes were identified. Major themes include advancing digital transformation and learning, learning contents and methods, and enhanced education financing, among others (see related story). The Dashboard visualizes countries’ thematic priorities and areas of transformative actions, while allowing them to consider other themes and sub-themes prioritized by other country contexts. (See the full list of themes and sub-themes).
Filters for theme or region of your interest. The Dashboard is an interactive tool allowing users to select themes and sub-themes using a drop-down menu to see which countries made commitments to specific thematic areas, and this information can also be filtered by regions. The filters can help facilitate cross-country learning, the exchange of innovative ideas, and good practices in translating commitments into actions among all countries.
- Visually displays National Statement of Commitment data in the form of an overview table and bar charts. The Dashboard’s bar charts show the number of countries that have committed to a selected theme or sub-theme, globally or regionally. Hovering your cursor over each bar will provide the exact number of countries committed to that theme or sub-theme.
- Showcases country profiles. The Dashboard will soon feature country profiles that present each country’s National Statement of Commitment, the themes and sub-themes committed, relevant resources and good practices, links to country data and existing policy documents.
Fostering cross-country learning and exchange
Hosted on the SDG 4 Knowledge Hub, UNESCO’s one-stop shop for all SDG 4 knowledge assets, the Dashboard aims to facilitate cross-country learning and encourages the exchange of good practices among all countries, including those that have not submitted their statements of commitment.
On visiting the Dashboard’s landing page, users can easily access learning materials, guidance documents, and other resources that can support countries in implementing their Transforming Education strategies and lead them closer to their SDG 4 targets. Their experiences and transformative actions undertaken in response to their commitments will be collected through a survey and integrated into the Dashboard in early 2024, ahead of the Global Education Meeting.
