Organized by the GEM Report, and the this afternoon event will commence with two dynamic panel discussions examining the intersectionality between education and climate change, participants will then explore and interact with demonstrations of real-world climate solutions from floating cork marshes to oyster bed restoration and more within the unique historic surrounds of Governors Island. Followed by a networking reception.

Panel 1 - Climate change and cities

Climate change related action has moved up the political and economic agenda around the world. In this session, our four panelists will briefly respond from their global or comparative perspective on pressing needs for climate change education, and what needs to happen in countries and cities.

Panel 2 - Climate change education in and beyond the classroom 

Young people and students around the world are leading demands for the transformation of climate change learning. There is an expressed preference for action-oriented learning, national and regional contextualization, and education that helps you appreciate and get climate justice. This panel will feature institutions that are actively engaged in changing how young people and educators engage with climate change challenges in the classroom and beyond.

Getting to Governors Island

  • Ferries operated by the Trust for Governors Island run daily year-round from the Battery Maritime Building, located at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan. Visit  for schedules and tickets. 
  • NYC Ferry, the City's public ferry service, also serves Governors Island daily year-round, with stops on the Lower East Side, Wall Street, and along the Brooklyn waterfront.
