TVET week in Gedaref
Promoting girls’ employment among youths and their families;
Promoting partnership relations between enterprises and TVET institutions;
Enhancing accessibility of the TVET institutions for disable people, IDPs and refugees, i.e. TVET inclusiveness.

The week started with launching event in the Gedaref’s Teacher Training Center with participation of about 300 people, of whom about 40% were women, and 60% – youth. The Gedaref’s state authorities welcomed UNESCO and GIZ, blessing their activities in Gedaref.

Then, using trainers being prepared in 2-day ToT in Khartoum on 27-28/07/2020 (26 trainers for teachers in total, including 11 women, and 8 from Gedaref and Kassala), the project team organized two training sessions for Gedaref’s TVET teachers on the TVET inclusiveness on 23-24/08/2020. The first training session in the Community Development College of the Gedaref University, where 25 teachers of the Gedaref’s Vocational Center were trained, including 15 women. The second training session in the Gedaref’s Teachers Training Center, where 25 teachers of the Gedaref’s technical schools were trained, including 12 women. The training sessions were supported by distributing relevant books and other training materials among trainees, which were developed earlier by the project.

The project team during the TVET week in Gedaref conducted 22 meetings and 1 workshop with 16 companies, including 4 of the public sector, convincing them to come to a win-win partnership with Gedaref’s TVET institutions. The summary of outputs of these meetings is:
- There are companies in Gedaref, who showed their interest in partnerships with the Sudanese TVET institutions; they
- Agree to train the TVET teachers, and take students for apprenticeships – targeting to have better graduates in the end (7 enterprises in Gedaref: DAL, CTC, French Technology, Mahgoub Sons, Aldoma, Aldroot, and Copen);
- Agree to open the opportunities for girls (all involved);
- Agree to start working on partnership agreements with TVET institutions (6 enterprises in Gedaref: DAL, CTC, French Technology, Mahgoub Sons, Aldoma, and Copen);
- Agree to promote graduates of the Sudanese TVET institutions among their partners (all involved);
- There is a great opportunity for the TVET-business cooperation in Gedaref’s agricultural industry; the Gedaref’s authorities started thinking about establishing a girls agriculture school in the state – cooperating with the private sector;
- Gedaref’s technical schools and vocational center are eager to work with the private sector – seeing their social valorization in good graduates fitting labor market demands;
- All agents involved in the discussions generally accepted the UNESCO’s model of TVET-business cooperation;
- A Gedaref’s state committee was established for engaging public and private sectors with TVET.
In the direction of promoting girls’ employment, the Gedaref Radio started broadcasting of ten developed radio messages in 3 forms each – flash (1-2 min), drama (5-6 min), and expert interview (5-6 min). These messages started being broadcasted also by the Kassala Radio, which covers Gedaref. In addition to this, two national radio stations (Omdurman and Biladi) also broadcasted free of charge the project messages ensuring quite full coverage of radio listeners. The campaign is planned for 20/08-20/10/2020.
Then, developed 8 promotional videos started being broadcasted by the Gedaref’s and Kassala’s TVs on 20/08-20/10/2020 in total 30 min each. The Sudan National TV agreed to show the project’s clips several times as their in-kind contribution to the project. Videos also were shown during all TVET-business meetings creating right atmosphere there.
Designed posters (6 different types) were exposed in Gedaref distributing 1080 copies over about 150 different locations (market place, all schools, main streets, cafes, mosques, family clubs, stadium, public transport buses, libraries, etc.) The project team also organized distribution of 3000 leaflets explaining possible girls’ carrier opportunities via TVET among girls and their families.
The week was reflected in 14 media messages – Radio and TV news and programs / big interviews, and newspaper’s articles. Evaluating the week’s results, Mr. Abdelrazig Yagoob, the Head of Technical Education in Gedaref told “This project through a stone on the still water of our lake, now we have more attention from our leaders and communities.” “We hunted for a rabbit and got an elephant”, complemented Mr. Abdelwahab Ibrahim Awad, the General Director of the Gedaref’s Ministry of Education.
