Preparations begin for the regional study on learning assessment, ERCE 2025
The fifth version of the Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (ERCE), whose objective is to obtain accurate information about student learning within educational systems in Latin America and the Caribbean and the factors that explain these advances or setbacks, is scheduled for 2025. The ERCE study is a tool for monitoring the quality of education that provides data to inform the educational debate and guide decision-making to improve the learning of children in the region.
The first face-to-face meeting on the ERCE 2025 implementation processes took place on January 24 and 25, 2023 at the 56th Meeting of LLECE National Coordinators, an event organized in Quito by the LLECE Laboratory of the Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago) together with the National Institute for Educational Evaluation of Ecuador (INEVAL). The meeting was attended by Ecuadorian authorities and the national coordinators of each member country of the Laboratory.
The working sessions included the review of the results of the curricular analysis of the participating countries, which will be used for the construction of the evaluation framework of the ERCE 2025 study. The event also presented the technical calendar for the development of instruments for learning assessments, the questionnaires of associated factors that will explain the context in which learning takes place, sampling instruments, and the capacity development plan, among other details.
"The ERCE 2025 study will evidence the level of educational achievement of students in the region as well as its evolution since the last measurement in 2019 and after the COVID-19 pandemic. It is part of the region's efforts to strengthen the information mechanisms needed to respond to the major challenges facing the region in education, says Claudia Uribe, director of OREALC/UNESCO Santiago, present at the meeting in Quito.
In turn, Susana Araujo, executive director of INEVAL, pointed out that "it is fundamental for Ecuador to participate once again in this study, which promotes the strengthening of local capacities in the processing, analysis, and reporting of large-scale evaluations." She also assured that "it is clear that learning achievements do not depend exclusively on the grade acquired by the student but on other factors associated with the quality of education. Therefore, it is pertinent to maintain the frequency of this evaluation to establish traceability in the results and generate public policy measures."
