The rapid rise of emerging technologies presents numerous opportunities in healthcare, education, and employment. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key driver of Africa’s socio-economic development, contributing to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN SDGs. With a potential economic impact of $1.5 trillion (6% of GDP), AI fosters growth and innovation in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and finance.

However, AI adoption raises ethical challenges. To address these, UNESCO adopted the in 2021 and is deploying an assessment methodology in 22 African countries to identify strengths and gaps. Expanding digital infrastructure and improving skills are crucial for responsible AI integration.

In this context, the African Union and UNESCO are collaborating on a continental AI strategy. Through its Flagship Programme 4 (2022-2029), UNESCO supports Africa in leveraging emerging technologies for sustainable development. Initiatives like African Women in AI and Youth Coding promote inclusive AI growth. Additionally, UNESCO is advancing ethical frameworks for neurotechnology and fostering cutting-edge technology adoption for global progress.
