Orange the world: UNESCO in Southern Africa stands against rape
25 November marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa has lined up a number of activities in the region under the global theme, “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape!”
Panel discussions on GBV will be held with higher and tertiary education students and academic lecturers focusing on finding lasting solutions to GBV in the sector and promoting access to Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and services. The discussions will be streamed live on the UNESCO ROSA Facebook page and broadcast on several radio stations in Zimbabwe.
Cases of sexual violence and abuse are rife in many higher and tertiary education institutions (HTEIs) in Southern Africa. A study commissioned by UNESCO in 2018 shows that students in tertiary institutions are highly exposed to GBV and sexual harassment and need specific attention and actions. UNESCO ROSA will thus use the panel discussions to call for action to address GBV challenges faced by students in HTEIs.
A half-day sensitization and training workshop will be organized for UNESCO ROSA staff focusing on (i) Gender equality paradigms, (ii) the normative frameworks, and (iii) GBV. A social media campaign will also be conducted giving messages on ending GBV and standing against rape.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline. It affects women regardless of their age, background, or level of education. This violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation.
The 16 days between 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and 10 December, Human Rights Day, are known as the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.
