Implementing open social science OSS innovations focuses in large part on showing more of the concrete evidence that underpins analysis of findings and researchers conclusions and arguments Many commentators have cast doubt on how far OSS approaches can be applied in qualitative research suggesting that only limited openness can be achieved especially where a large part of the evidencebase comes from qualitative interviews Some forms of interviews aiming to recover the lifeworld of interviewees as a whole and as they see it may be feasible to do on a fully on the record basis where archiving of whole transcripts or recordings is feasible with the permission of interviewees By contrast for elite and specialized interviewing and conversations are off the record then transcripts and recordings cannot be archived or shared with other researchers However most such interviews are now conducted on a nonattributable basis where direct quotations are allowed so long as they are completely anonymized With care it may be feasible to achieve nonstraightforward ways of archiving or allowing reaccess to such materials Finally changes in interview technologies towards using digital methods have opened up new ways of conducting and making available interviewing that might begin to approximate systematic podcasting or videocasting interviews This event was part of a series of seminars?organised to support the development of the?

The Community Engagement Programs CommunityAcademic Research Engagement CARE Committee prepared this guide to inform UCSF investigators about the processes and steps involved in developing research collaborations with communitybased organizations and institutions We have included resources to facilitate this work and address some of thebarriers to collaboration The overall aim of this document is to orient UCSF researchers seeking to do rigorous research built on research partnerships with public and communitybased agency staff This guide is designed to inform facilitate and support such partnerships so research can meet the needs of researchers collaborative partners and participants A companion guide is available on the UCSFCE website for agency staff who would like to explore such partnerships with UCSF investigators While this document refers to specific UCSF resources and projects much of the information it provides is generalizable to other institutions and can be a resource for investigators across the US

Science communication is often seen as a unidirectional process from scientist to nonscientists but with careful and strategic engagement it can be so much more For this a deeper understanding of the basics and existing structures is needed as well as the capabilities of newer channels like social media This module will teach effective techniques for communicating your research with a wider audience as well as engaging them with the process itself

Reproducible research is at the heart of science There has been an increased need and willingness to open and share research from the data collection right through to the interpretations of results This has come with its own set of challenges which include designing workflows that can be adopted by collaborators in a way that does not compromise the integrity of their contribution This module will introduce the necessary tools required for transparent reporting which is reproducible and readable
