About the Communication and Information Sector
UNESCO’s Communication and Information (CI) Sector champions freedom of expression, media development, media and information literacy, universal access to information, and documentary heritage preservation, leveraging digital technologies to promote peace and sustainable development.
- At the core of the CI Sector's mission is the protection of fundamental freedoms and public access to information, in alignment with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly target 16.10.2.
- As the lead UN agency driving the United Nations Action Plan on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, UNESCO continues to advocate for the safety of media professionals, with a focus on women journalists, while combating impunity.
- The CI Sector supports the growth of free, diverse and independent journalism, addressing the critical challenges of media viability and journalism in emergency situations.
- Recognizing the transformative impact of digital technologies on media and information ecosystems, UNESCO is intensifying its efforts to promote media and information literacy (MIL). Prioritizing critical thinking and building resilience against dis/misinformation and hate speech, particularly among youth, remains a central focus.
- UNESCO works to bridge the digital divide, strengthen digital governance and policies, and build human and institutional capacities for digital transformation. It also leads discussions on urgent issues arising from rapid technological advancements, emphasizing a Human Rights and ethics perspective.
- The Sector serves as the Secretariat for the Memory of the World (MoW) Register, which lists documentary heritage recommended by the International Advisory Committee. Inclusion in the Register publicly acknowledges the importance of the documentary heritage, raising its visibility and improving access to it.
- Additionally, the Sector leads the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) to promote multilingualism and linguistic diversity.
