Workshop on Nanotechnology Applications in Environment, Energy, Medicine and Electronics: Promotion, Potential and Challenges

On 7-8 March 2018, the UNESCO Khartoum Office, Nanotechnology and Materials Chair in the University of Khartoum (MNRC), and the UNESCO Chair for Women in Sciences and Technology organized the workshop on Nanotechnology Applications in Environment, Energy, Medicine and Electronics: Promotion, Potential and Challenges. The workshop took place in the Hall of Engineering Department of the University of Khartoum, and attracted attention of about two hundred participants.
The workshop started with welcoming speeches of Dr. Dina Mohamed Bilal, the Assistant to the Dean of Engineering Department in the University of Khartoum, Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the Head of UNESCO Khartoum Office, and Prof. Intasar Segheeron El-Zain, who represented the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Khartoum.

The technical session started with a presentation of Dr. Omer Salih Mohamed Nour about opportunities and challenges for nanotechnology in Sudan. Then, the participants discussed nanotechnology applications in Environment and Energy, which followed next day by discussions on nanotechnology applications in Electronics and Medicine, on challenges and potential of nanotechnology in Sudan, and, finally, on women empowerment in nanotechnology.
During the closing session, the participants approved workshop recommendations, and honoured the UNESCO Khartoum Office and Chair for Women in Sciences and Technology for supporting the activity.
The main workshop recommendations concluded were the following:
To establish a National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), and to bring it under partonage of the Council of Ministers.
To assign to the MNRC a role of being the Sudanese national umbrella for nanotechnology.
To initiate research group(s) in nanotechnology under auspice of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
To incorporate nanotechnology in the university level of education in Sudan.
To raise public awareness concerning nanotechnology and its applications in different life aspects.
To organize biennial Sudanese Nanotechnology Conference.
