Visit of the UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Science to the UNESCO Office in Khartoum

On the 20th-22nd of February 2016, UNESCO鈥檚 ADG/SC Dr. Flavia Schlegel visited Khartoum. During her stay in the city she met the Khartoum office鈥檚 staff, the representative of UNEP, the Sudanese member of UNESCO鈥檚 Executive Board Prof. Abdin Salih, the General Secretary of the National Commission for UNESCO Dr. Abdulgader Muhammad, the General Director of the National Corporation for the Antiquities and Museums Dr. Abdelrahman Ali Mohamed; she payed visits to the Minister of Education / Chair of the National Commission for UNESCO H.E. Dr. Souad Abdelrazig, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research H.E. Prof. Somaiya Abukashawa, the Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity, H.E. Ambassador Muataz Musa, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Antiquities and Wildlife H.E. Dr. Graham Abdulgader; she delivered speeches in the opening ceremonies of the Seventh Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Conference (in Basic and Engineering Sciences), and UNESCO鈥檚 Expert Group Meeting 鈥淐ontribution of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) to an escape from the middle income trap under conditions of economic difficulties鈥.
Resulting her discussions with the government authorities, a set of priorities for Sudan-UNESCO cooperation in the domain of SC were identified, including:
- Further integrating the Sudanese professionals into the UNESCO鈥檚 networks of competency.
- Developing Water Harvesting in Sudan, promoting the UNESCO鈥檚 category 2 center for Water Harvesting in Sudan to being a hub of appropriate brain and competency networks, and also a knowledge hub.
- Facilitating regional peacebuilding activities around transboundary 鈥淪hared Waters鈥 鈥 expanding appropriate UNESCO activities beyond the Eastern Nile case.
- Strengthening Sudanese universities 鈥 a GO-SPIN programme.
- Strengthening STEM education in Sudan in both Higher Education and General Education systems.
- Supporting TVET development in Sudan; exploring the collected Sudanese knowledge / experience about the TVET=>HE integration.
- Promoting the conservation of Nature in Sudan 鈥 with a special focus on transboundary issues: for example, the Dinder National Park / Biosphere Reserve (Sudan 鈥 Ethiopia), and the Jebel Ouenat site (Sudan 鈥 Egypt 鈥 Libya).
Promoting biosphere reserves and historical sites together 鈥 with special attention to the integration of nearby communities; selecting and piloting one 鈥渢ourist way鈥 in Sudan; developing a Web map for a presentation of the Sudanese Cultural and Natural Heritage to the public.
