UNESCO welcomes declaration of G7 Education Ministers

G7 education ministers 2023

UNESCO welcomes the of G7 Education Ministers adopted during their meeting from 12-15 May 2023 in Toyama and Kanazawa, Japan.

“We now call on G7 global leaders to prioritize investments and transformation in education when they meet later this month at the Hiroshima Summit,” says Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education.

The world is at a decisive crossway – to continue on an unsustainable path or radically change course. Education stands as a powerful lever to shape the futures we want. It connects us with the world and with others, exposes us to new possibilities, and strengthens our capacities for dialogue and action.

Transforming education means equipping learners with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to care for and adapt to an uncertain and complex world.

“This requires a shift in mindsets that emphasizes collaboration, diversity, and solidarity – and is grounded in a vision of education as a human right, a public endeavor and a common good,” Ms Giannini said.

The Declaration of G7 Education Ministers includes commitments to lifelong learning, transformative action in areas such as greening education, as well as inclusive education for all learners, and opportunities to pursue their well-being.  It also recognizes that recent development of digital technologies, including generative artificial intelligence, provides learning and teaching opportunities while posing challenges to educational systems.
