UNESCO Honored with Freedom of Expression Award: A Commitment to Vigilance
In a heartfelt message sent to São Paulo where the award ceremony took place, Dr Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information extended gratitude to the entire UNESCO family and their partners, including journalists, media houses, NGOs, judges, prosecutors, lawyers, parliamentarians, diplomats and all those who contribute to the global dialogue. The award serves as a testament to these partners’ collective efforts in defending the fundamental principles of freedom of expression.
Quoting Thomas Jefferson, Dr Jelassi stated, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance", emphasising that the award is more than a celebration but a constant wake-up call. Recent UNESCO data reveals that 85% of the world's population has experienced a decline in freedom of expression over the past five years.
The ANJ Press Freedom Award is granted to personalities and organizations that have stood out in defending the principles and values in favour of a free and independent press, as well as protecting the physical and moral integrity of journalists.
A Core Mandate for Nearly Eight Decades
Freedom of expression and the safety of journalists have been central to UNESCO's mandate since its creation nearly eight decades ago. The award recognises the Organization's pivotal role in advocating for an environment where journalists can work securely, ensuring an unhindered flow of information and ideas.
