UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar in India
I condemn the killing of Mukesh Chandrakar and call for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Investigative journalists take great risks to inform society of wrongdoing, and their safety is therefore crucial in empowering populations to safeguard the public good.
Mukesh Chandrakar worked as a freelance journalist for several TV channels and was operating the Bastar Junction YouTube channel. He went missing on 1 January, and his body was reportedly found on 3 January in a septic tank in the home of one of the subjects of his recent investigations.
