UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Khaled Balel in Sudan

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Khaled Balel in his home in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, Sudan on 1 March 2024.

Khaled Balel was a journalist and media director at the Sudanese Supreme Council for Media and Culture, and a member of the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate. He was reportedly shot and killed while at his residence.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
