UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Alejandro Gallegos León in Mexico
I condemn the killing of Alejandro Gallegos León and call for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Journalists play a crucial role in informing their communities and impunity for crimes against them must never be allowed to prevail,
Alejandro Gallegos León managed the media website La Voz del Pueblo, and covered local educational and political issues for Tabasco Hoy. He reportedly disappeared on 24 January and was found shot dead the next day in the city of Cárdenas.
Alejandro Gallegos León is the second journalist killed in Mexico since the beginning of the year.
