UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Hamza Murtaja in Palestine

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Hamza Murtaja in Gaza City, Palestine, on 20 August.

I condemn the killing of Hamza Murtaja. Journalists and media workers play a crucial role in informing the world, ensuring the population鈥檚 right to information. I reiterate my call to respect UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 unanimously adopted on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict. I call for a full and transparent investigation into this tragedy.

Hamza Murtaja was a camera operator and co-owner of the Record Media production company, and worked with multiple international media outlets. He was reporting on displaced people taking shelter in the Hafiz Mustafa school when he was killed in an airstike.
