UNESCO Director-General condemns the killing of journalist Chhoeung Chheng in Cambodia

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Chhoeung Chheng in Siem Reap, in northwestern Cambodia on 7 December.

I condemn the killing of Chhoeung Chheng and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Environmental reporters are essential for providing information to communities affected by climate disruption and other environmental challenges, and must be protected.

Chhoeung Chheng was a journalist covering environmental issues for local online media outlet, Kampuchea Aphivath. He was reportedly shot while covering the transport of alleged illegal logging in the Boeung Per Wildlife Sanctuary on 4 December. He succumbed to his injuries three days later while in hospital.
