UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Ashfaq Ahmed Sial in Pakistan
I condemn the killing of Ashfaq Ahmed Sial. I urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this killing and bring the perpetrators to justice. Impunity for such crimes against journalists cannot be tolerated.
Ashfaq Ahmed Sial was a journalist for the local newspaper Daily Khabrain. He was killed by two unidentified gunmen on motorcycles while on his way to work. He is the second journalist killed in Pakistan in May, and the third since the beginning of the year.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
