Ms. Irina Bokova, General Director of UNESCO, met Ms. Suad Abdulraziq, Minister of Education, Sudan

On 2nd November 2015 Ms. Irina Bokova, the General Director of UNESCO, met the Sudanese Delegation to the General Conference of UNESCO – Ms. Suad Abdulraziq, the Minister of Education, Mr. Nasreldin Wali, the Ambassador to UNESCO and to France, Mr. Sirajuddin Yousif, the Director General of International Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdulgadir Nureddin, the General Secretary of the Sudanese National Commission.
H.E. Minister underlined the general commitment of Sudanese Government to the 2030 Agenda, indicated that these objectives are being mainstreamed in the National Education Sector Strategic Plan for 2017-2021. She draws attention to main areas of focus that require further international support:
1) TVET reform, stressing the urgency of providing skills to young people
2) Literacy Campaign, with the goal of eradicating youth illiteracy in the next five years
3) Teacher training, calling for support to National Teacher Training Institute
4) Early Childhood Development
H.E. Minister made also a reference to General History of Africa and importance of translating this into pedagogical tools and audio-visual materials that can be integrated in the curriculum, calling for additional support for this endeavor; mentioned general success of establishing a Water Harvesting Centre (UNESCO’s Category 2 Institution) to help address environmental concerns; expressed a satisfaction with the cooperation with UNESCO Khartoum and calls for this to be further reinforced.
She invited the DG to attend an International Conference on Science and Technology to be held in Khartoum in February 2016. H.E. General Director of UNESCO expressed appreciation for sharing national ambitions and commitments; confirmed her further support to the Khartoum Office; will look into invitation to visit Sudan in February 2016.
