Invitation to Conduct a Global Survey on Digital Content Creators’ Intentions, Practices and Ethics
Digital content creators significantly influence public opinions, trends and consumer behavior. Despite this, there is a lack of comprehensive research into their motivations, ethics and accountability mechanisms. As the UN agency with the mandate to promote freedom of expression, access to information and media and information literacy, UNESCO aims to understanding the dynamics of digital content creators. This initiative will lead to the development of a comprehensive survey of digital content creators. By leading this effort, UNESCO seeks to enhance responsible content creation and informed digital citizenship.
The survey, to be launched during the Global Media and Information Literacy Week (24-31 October 2024), will assess digital content creators’ media and information literacy skills and ethical considerations. It will explore their knowledge of the international standards on freedom of expression, resilience to harmful online content, contributions to the digital information ecosystem, and their relationship with traditional media.
The findings will inform UNESCO’s support for these new actors, including an online course being developed in partnership with the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. This course aims to equip digital content creators and journalists with essential media and information literacy skills. By identifying strengths and weaknesses and needs, the survey will guide UNESCO in empowering digital content creators and strengthen their role as information relays.
