Director-General condemns killing of journalist Gerardo Torres RenterÃa in Mexico
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay has called for an investigation into the killing of journalist Gerardo Torres RenterÃa in Acapulco on 11 May.

I condemn the killing of Gerardo Torres RenterÃa and urge the authorities to investigate this killing. Journalists play a critical role in informing audiences and investigating wrongdoing, and they must be protected.

RenterÃa, a former cameraman and reporter for Telemundo, TV Azteca Guerrero, Televisa Guerrero and correspondent for the Reuters news agency, is reported to have continued working for local media outlets. He was shot dead in his home.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
