2nd Beautiful Girl Inside Out: Personality Development for Alternative Learning System Learners
UNESCO Jakarta with the National Organization of Science Teachers and Educators, Inc (NOSTE) gathered 143 Alternative Learning System (ALS) girl-learners from the Department of Education-Division of Leyte for the 2nd Beautiful Girl Inside Out: Personality Development for ALS Learners鈥 on 14 December 2018 at the Mini-Theatre of the Leyte Normal University (LNU). This initiative was organized within the framework of the project 鈥淏etter Life for Out-of-School Girls Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines,鈥 which is implemented together with the Philippines鈥 Department of Education (DepEd) with funding support from the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Dr. Mee Young Choi, Head of the Education Unit of UNESCO Jakarta, stated during her welcome remarks that UNESCO Jakarta under the leadership of its Director and Representative, Dr. Shahbaz Khan is devoted to support efforts to promote women empowerment and protect the rights of every citizen especially girls to quality and equitable education. Mr. Edgar Tenasas, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of DepEd- Division of Leyte, encouraged the participants to make practical and effective use of the lessons that was shared by the invited speakers. He also thanked UNESCO and KOICA for providing opportunities for ALS girl-learners to acquire additional knowledge on how to develop their confidence and become the best version of themselves.
The morning session of the workshop focused on giving the participants a chance to interact with and learn from notable and accomplished women from various fields. One of the motivational speakers was Atty. Camille Jaojoco Villasin who passed the Bar Exams on her third try. During her talk, Atty. Villasin highlighted the importance of not giving up and working smarter to achieve one鈥檚 goals. She also highlighted the relevance of taking care of one鈥檚 physical and mental health while studying and preparing for a major exam. Other notable speakers invited during the morning session were Professor Ervina Espina, Psychosocial Support Specialist and Mrs. Rachel Cuevas, Education Program Supervisor from DepEd Regional Office 8 who also shared their stories and how they were able to hurdle the challenges they faced before achieving success.
The afternoon session, on the other hand, endeavored to teach the ALS girl-learners fundamental information on personal grooming and hygiene. The three speakers which included Prof. Ervina Espina, Ms. Rosemarie Medalla, University Nurse of LNU and Dr. Rutchel Zeta, University Physician of LNU talked about feminine hygiene, skin care, dental care, stress management and girl-specific health issues among others.
At the end of the workshop, each participant received a learning and hygiene kit which has sanitary napkin, toothbrush, toothpaste, bath soap, hair brush, alcohol, notebook and ballpen in it.
The 1st Beautiful Girl Inside Out: Personality Development for Alternative Learning System Learners was conducted on 24 March 2018 at the DepEd Regional Office VIII and was attended by 119 ALS girl-learners from the DepEd-Division of Palo, Leyte.
