Climate-resilient Water Management Approaches: Application Towards Climate Action and 2030 Agenda

This?threeday conference organized prior to COP26 was?expected to raise awareness and build capacity around new approaches to assessing and addressing ClimateResilient Water Management Approaches including their vast potential within global climate policy and sustainable development agendas The first day of the conference began?with an overview of the role of water in sustainable development policies The event then moved?to a highlevel policy discussion on how these approaches fit into NDCs SDGs and other national climate or development programs?The?second day brought a complementary set of bottomup approaches to climate adaptation on?three discussion panels with selected speakers from the webinar series Adaptation in an age of uncertainty tools for climateresilient water management approaches coorganized by UNESCO AGWA and ICIWARM in 20202021 Finally on the third day highlevel speakers shared their insights on the priorities and ambitions for COP26 followed by a session on practical approaches to institutionalize solutions secure stakeholder engagement and enhance capacity building The event was concluded with a synthesis of the conference to be presented at COP26 The outcomes of the conference will provide inputs to the implementation of the IHP IX 20222029 Science for a water secure World in a Changing Environment This was a truly global conference with a total of 1238 individuals registered online for the threeday conference hailing from 149 countries 658 individuals attended at least one session for a total of 1138 cumulated attendees from 125 countries which represents 53 attendance The gender balance of attendees was distributed as 62 male and 38 female All regional groups were represented at the conference with the African States leading in terms of attendance 361 attendees followed by the AsiaPacific States 356 attendees Additional 472 participants joined the conference through the YouTube live stream The recordings of the three days of the global conference are accesible in the Programme in English and French ? The success or failure of our climate future is in world leaders hands stressed Alok Sharma President of the 26th United Nations Climate Conference COP26 in a speech given at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 12 October Recalling that temperatures have already risen at least 11 degrees above preindustrial levels and that the world has not done enough since the adoption of the landmark Paris Agreement in 2015 he urged leaders to take ambitious action at COP26 in a few weeks to ensure that the 15degree limit does not slip out of reach Shamila NairBedouelle UNESCO Assistant DirectorGeneral for Natural Sciences and Vladimir Ryabinin Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and Assistant Director General of UNESCO presented concrete actions and tools at the disposal of Member States to step up climate action drawing from science education culture and communication and information

Protection and Preservation of Cultural Heritage in the event of crisis and disaster in Cameroon

The recent natural disasters as well as the crisis and humanitarian needs in Cameroon have raised concerns about community traditional systems built heritage and collections Most often represented by community museums they are at serious risk and often very little documented and secured ? A joint team from?the Ministry of?Arts?and?Culture of Cameroon and from the UNESCO?Regional Office in Central Africa carried out an emergency assessment during the month of February in?Goulfey Mokolo and Yagoua?Far North region ?Cameroon in view of urgent interventions at?cultural heritage?sites?museums?and collections at risk This field assessment falls within the pilot project Emergency assessment and urgent interventions at cultural heritage sites museums and collections at risk in the NorthWest SouthWest and Far North regions of Cameroon funded by the?UNESCOs Heritage Emergency Fund The recent natural disasters as well as the crisis and humanitarian needs in Cameroon have raised concerns about community traditional systems built heritage and collections Most often represented by community museums they are at serious risk and often very little documented and secured Piloting urgent activities in the Far North NorthWest and SouthWest regions the proposed activity is meant as rapid intervention tool with a view to anticipate and complement national efforts by seeking at engaging communities in enhancing the protection and preservation of cultural heritage Through documenting and monitoring the conditions of cultural property at major risk as well as securing community museums and preparing local community in mitigating damages As one sought impact while empowering professionals in first aid and prevention the project is designed with a view to directly contribute to prepare local communities to adoptoperationalize security plans The joint team identified needs on the most critical interventions required to strengthen the security at the site with a?view to avoid loss of Cultural Heritage The team also led some working meetings with administrative community and traditional leaders and some humanitarian actors notably the UN OCHA suboffice in Maroua in order to identify adequate proposals coordinate action and unite for heritage The Heritage Emergency Fund is a multidonor and nonearmarked funding mechanism established by UNESCO in 2015 to enable the Organization to respond quickly and effectively to crises resulting from armed conflicts and disasters caused by natural and humanmade hazards all over the world UNESCO works to achieve this objective by strengthening the ability of Member States to prevent mitigate and recover the loss of cultural heritage and diversity in emergencies and by advocating for the incorporation of the protection of culture into humanitarian action security strategies and peacebuilding processes including by harnessing the potential of culture to strengthen resilience and support recovery
