The SDG 4 Youth & Student Network Contributes to Advancing Education and Youth Empowerment at the Summit of the Future
Advocating for the inclusion of education in the Pact for the Future
The SDG 4 Youth & Student Network, hosted by UNESCO, joined global leaders, policymakers, international organizations and other youth changemakers in New York as part of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and participated in the Summit of the Future on 22-23 September 2024. The Summit culminated in the adoption of the action-oriented "," which focuses on five topics: sustainable development and financing for development; youth and future generations; and transforming global governance. The adoption of the Pact reinforces the commitment to sustainable solutions for current and future generations while advocating for the need to place youth at the forefront of these efforts.
Before attending the Summit, the Network submitted written inputs to the Zero Draft of the Pact for the Future and participated in consultations for the Global Digital Compact. It consolidated its recommendations in the think piece 鈥Including Education in the Pact for the Future: An SDG 4 Youth & Student Network Contribution鈥, highlighting case studies of initiatives led by Network members and emphasizing that inclusive education is crucial for achieving the Pact's objectives. The document provides key recommendations for TVET, digital learning, and protecting education from crises, advocating for strong infrastructure, mental health support, and accessible vocational education. The Network also raised global awareness through , promoting an #InclusiveFuture through #InclusiveEducation.
The SDG 4 Youth & Student Network鈥檚 contributions at the Summit of the Future
Several Network representatives attended the Summit, which allowed them to emphasize the transformative role of education in achieving sustainable development. Ahead of the UN Action Days leading to the Summit of the Future, Arlinda Ramqaj and Hayette Bellakehal joined the Global Schools Program for a , where they highlighted the importance of collaboration, financing for youth-led organizations, and supporting existing frameworks such as the Youth Declaration on Transforming Education.
Ilan Enverga, the SDG 4 Youth & Student Network representative at the SDG4 High-Level Steering Committee, participated in the , in a panel about empowering young people with transformative education alongside renowned figures such as Andreas Schleicher from the OECD and Yasmine Sherif from Education Cannot Wait. 鈥Working with young people is like I'm in the business of hope鈥 young people are true leaders and champions of education transformation; they are the change we need in our systems,鈥 Ilan said.
Furthermore, several young leaders from the SDG 4 Youth & Student Network contributed to the . Taibat Hussain took the stage to convey an important message from young people regarding online gender-based violence: 鈥Make online spaces safe for children and youth without compromising digital rights.鈥 Ajmal Ramyar, who participated in a different panel, shared the importance of advocating for solutions to critical global challenges. 鈥We should start advocating from the ground level,鈥 he remarked, acknowledging that in his own experience, 鈥it wasn't easy,鈥 but that 鈥we should define our own engagement, and we should know how to include ourselves in important discussions for advocacy.鈥
Additionally, other initiatives in which Network members participated during the include the UN Global Compact collaborative event titled 鈥,鈥 where Arlinda Ramqaj and Adina Nivukoski joined stakeholders in highlighting key developments and good practices in responsible leadership education. Members were also able to meet with UNESCO staff from the Global Education Monitoring Report, with whom they discussed the development of an indicator on youth participation in education policy-making, which UNESCO is developing in accordance with a decision by the SDG4 High-Level Steering Committee.
Looking ahead
The Summit of the Future was an opportunity to present the SDG 4 Youth & Student Network's recommendations for action to key stakeholders, advocating for greater youth engagement in policy and decision-making. Looking ahead, Network members will continue to advocate for these principles through their work in their communities and on the global stage, such as with the upcoming 2024 Global Education Meeting, while remaining committed to advancing SDG 4 for current and future generations.;
