France calls for the transformation of education financing

During the SDG4 High-Level Steering Committee (HLSC) Leaders’ Meeting held on 8 November 2023 at UNESCO, Mr Gabriel Attal, former French Minister of Education and Youth (now Prime Minister), underscored the importance of global education cooperation in ensuring that every learner gains access to quality education.
France committed to transform education financing

‘With three quarters of the world’s population receiving only a tenth of the total global spending on education, attaining the 2030 education goals has been slowed’, said Attal. ‘The SDG4 High-Level Steering Committee's (HLSC) work in pushing for increased, equitable, and effective financing for development in the education sector, with France at the forefront — being the fourth largest donor of international aid — is crucial to transform the education landscape and to make quality learning accessible to everyone.’

This year’s HLSC Leaders’ meeting provided an opportunity to report on progress towards SDG4 targets and to further discuss the approaches that were seen as key to the success of transforming education systems, such as education finance transformation.
