The education agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 puts emphasis on quality education, justice, equality and inclusion.

In his interview with the Spiegel newspaper, Walter Hirche of Germany country representative for Europe and North America on the SDG-Education 2030 Steering Committee, explains his fears for meeting the objective of ensuring access to education for every child by 2030 and stresses that International Education Day should be a wakeup call for countries to do much more in the field of education. Walter Hirche:

• underscores that we are still far from reaching the education goals and targets;
• calls on developed countries to increase the share of financial resources going to education as part of development aid;
• emphasizes the teacher gap and the urgency of investing in teacher training;
• warns that perceiving quick successes as efficient is a recipe for greater obstacles for education in the future, because education needs patience; and
• stresses that without progress in the field of education, the remaining SDGs will not be achieved.
