Swiss National Prize for Open Research Data (ORD Prize)

Awarded since 2023 by the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, the National Prize for Open Research Data (ORD Prize) recognizes Swiss researchers at all career levels for innovative approaches and best practices in open research data. The aim is to accelerate the open science movement on a national level, make ORD practices rewarding for researchers and foster the transition to practices that set standards for (data) communities. The prize is part of the Swiss National ORD Strategy, a joint approach of ETH Domain, the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and swissuniversities, mandated by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) in 2020.

The winners are selected by the ORD Prize Jury, comprising members of the ORD Sounding Board Researchers ¨C a board composed of 16 ORD experts from different disciplines and career levels. The ORD Prize Jury is led by an elected chair who is responsible for the thematic focus of the annual call and oversees the evaluation process. Each application is reviewed by two jury members under the following criteria: methodological innovative, impactful and community-based. In a second phase, the shortlisted candidates are reviewed by all jury members, and winners are elected in a jury meeting.

In 2023, the prize rewarded research projects that exemplified the reuse of research data. Building upon this, the prize in 2024 recognized projects that emphasize collaborative or interdisciplinary reuse of research data or implement educational or outreach activities related to research data reuse.

Since its two years of establishment, the prize has raised awareness of open research data in Switzerland and promoted an open research culture within scientific communities.
