Picture A Scientist Film Screenings Campaign

Cross-Cutting Themes

Picture A Scientist () is a documentary film that explores the systemic challenges faced by women in the sciences and the efforts to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive research environment. Directed and produced by Ian Cheney, Sharon Shattuck, and Manette Pottle, the film follows the experiences of biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring as they navigate discrimination ranging from overt harassment to persistent, subtle biases. Through their personal narratives and insights from social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists, the documentary sheds light on the structural barriers within the scientific community and highlights pathways towards meaningful change.

Beyond its cinematic impact, the initiative has facilitated widespread engagement by collaborating with schools, labs, associations, clubs, non-profits, corporations and more to host over 3000 screenings and discussions in over 75 countries. These events, conducted both in person and virtually, serve to raise awareness and foster dialogue on gender equity in science. In support of these efforts, the film team's distributor provides resources created by the film team to guide discussions and encourage actionable steps after the screenings.
