African Network for Women in Astronomy (AfNWA)
The African Network for Women in Astronomy (AfNWA), a sub-committee of the African Astronomical Society, serves as a platform to unite women across Africa engaged in astronomy and related disciplines. This initiative seeks to create a strong network of female professionals in astronomy in Africa while inspiring young girls to pursue interests in astronomy, space science, and broader scientific endeavours, thus promoting female participation in the field. Since its inception, AfNWA has launched impactful initiatives, including the establishment of the annual AfNWA Awards in 2021, which recognize exceptional contributions by early-career and senior women scientists in Africa. Additionally, AfNWA has produced outreach videos showcasing women scientists at various stages of their careers. These videos highlight the researchers¡¯ work and aspirations, providing relatable and inspiring role models for young girls. For the International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly (GA) 2024, the first GA held in Africa (6-15 August 2024, Cape Town, South Africa), AfNWA designed a storytelling book on professional female astronomers in Africa. The book is to give more visibility to women astronomers in Africa, their research and their life stories, and to inspire and empower the young people through these stories.
