The UNESCO-EU Transcultura programme opens a call for sustainable tourism workshops at the Isla Verde Festival in Cuba

This call for applications is launched within the framework of Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, a five-year programme implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office in Havana with the support of the European Union. The overall purpose of Transcultura is to deepen regional integration in the Caribbean and strengthen cooperation and exchange between peoples in the region and with the European Union. The programme is based on two components: the first focuses on strengthening the skills and capacities of young cultural professionals and the second on creating opportunities through knowledge transfer and cultural exchanges.
In this context, the Transcultura programme is joining forces with the Local Development Project as part of its International Film and Environment Festival of the Caribbean to promote training spaces on entrepreneurship in cultural and creative tourism, with a focus on environmental management. Participants will acquire knowledge and practical skills to carry out their own projects and contribute to the development of a sustainable tourism ecosystem in the Caribbean, linking Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) with the dynamics of Caribbean tourist destinations.
The workshops will last five days each and will include keynote lectures in plenary sessions, technical visits and group work sessions. The courses will be conducted in Spanish; therefore, proficiency in the language is required for participation. The workshops will cover the following thematic areas:
- Sustainable Entrepreneurship: from Concept to Impact in Small Tourist Destinations
- Definition and importance of entrepreneurship: identifying opportunities
- Practical techniques for writing funding applications: creating a compelling narrative
- Structure and components of a project proposal: integrating social and environmental impact
- Identification of strengths and resources: building alliances with local stakeholders
- Practical projects and successful applications in the real world: case studies in Cuba and the Caribbean - Community-Based Tourism: Building Responsible Futures
- Introduction to community-based tourism: definition and principles
- Benefits of community-based tourism for local economies
- Methods to promote community participation and ownership
- Identity, sustainability and authentic experiences
- Case studies in the Caribbean
- A Visual Journey: Creative Experiences for Tourism Photography
- Storytelling and audiovisual production: understanding cameras, lenses and essential equipment
- Photography techniques: composition, lighting and capturing movement
- Videography techniques: framing, camera movements and sound recording
- Ethical practices: non-invasive methods for photographing and filming nature
- A guided tour to a selected natural area in Isla de la Juventud for a practical photography and video session
To be eligible for the UNESCO Transcultura programme's Sustainable Tourism workshops, you must be between 18 and 35 years old and must be a citizen and legal resident of one of the 17 Caribbean countries within the geographical scope of the Transcultura programme: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
About the Isla Verde Festival
Founded in Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, in 2022 by the renowned Cuban actor and director Jorge PerugorrÃa, the is a creative space for promoting collective environmental initiatives in the region. It aspires to turn Isla de la Juventud, a municipality located 50 km south of Havana, into a leader in transformation based on sustainable local development and as a destination for cultural and environmental tourism in the Caribbean. Its activities include a film competition and a programme of conferences and workshops, taught by prestigious professionals, focusing on topics of interest to Isla Verde, such as sustainable tourism, sustainable business models and new creative economies.

Support for entrepreneurship and sustainable cultural tourism in the Caribbean are strategic lines of action of the UNESCO Transcultura programme, funded by the European Union. The initiative supports the integration of the cultural and creative Industries with tourism, generating opportunities for artists and culture professionals, and promoting sustainable tourism rooted in local identity and values.
