Tumbes host international meeting on advancing mangrove restoration efforts
• Participants included representatives from reserves in Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.
From August 10 to 13, the Noroeste Amotapes Manglares Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its ecological and cultural significance and managed by the Manglares Consortium, hosted the fourth annual meeting of the MangRes Project (Mangrove restoration as a nature-based solution in biosphere reserves in Latin America and the Caribbean).
This project, coordinated by UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and funded by the Government of Flanders (Kingdom of Belgium) and the National Parks Autonomous Agency (OAPN) of the Government of Spain, aims to restore and conserve mangroves in seven biosphere reserves across Latin America and the Caribbean: Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.
The meeting was attended by Guiomar Alonso Cano, UNESCO Peru Representative, as well as representatives from the Regional Government of Tumbes (GORE Tumbes, by its Spanish acronym) and SERNANP.
The event served as a key platform for knowledge and experience exchange in mangrove ecosystem protection, with the following activities taking place:
Training on Mangrove Restoration Monitoring and education for sustainable development
During the meeting, held from August 11 to 13, a series of workshops focused on capacity building for mangrove restoration monitoring and education for sustainable development were conducted.
The monitoring workshops were led by Mexican scientists from CINVESTAV and ENES – UNAM Mérida and covered advanced techniques for mangrove restoration monitoring. Participants acquired basic concepts and methodologies for monitoring mangrove restoration, identifying indicators, and evaluating them to ensure the effectiveness of restoration campaigns, culminating in a practical exercise at the Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary.
Transformation of Pedagogical Practice Towards education for sustainable development
In this workshop, education for sustainable development was presented as an alternative to promote environmental sustainability using pedagogical strategies in biosphere reserves.
Launch of the Noroeste Amotapes Manglares Biosphere Reserve Brand
This brand represents the biosphere reserve's commitment to conservation and sustainability, seeking to strengthen its identity at national and international levels. The launch not only reinforces the recognition of the reserve's value but also promotes greater commitment to its protection, fostering local entrepreneurship, and contributing to the region's economic development.
Representing the Peruvian National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI, by its Spanish acronym), the Director of Distinctive Signs, Sergio Chuez, and the regional head in Tumbes, Valentina Vásquez, presented the certification mark registration to the regional governor, Segismundo Cruces Ordinola. The presentation took place during an emotional ceremony as part of the Annual Meeting of the Project "Mangrove restoration as a nature-based solution in biosphere reserves in Latin America and the Caribbean (MangRes)."
Key Collaboration of the Manglares Consortium, the Regional Government of Tumbes, and SERNANP
The Manglares Consortium, in collaboration with the Regional Government of Tumbes and the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP, by its Spanish acronym), has played a crucial role in the implementation and promotion of the MangRes Project in the region. These entities have worked together to ensure that the project's activities align with local needs and are executed effectively. Their collaboration reflects a shared commitment to the protection and restoration of mangroves, essential for both biodiversity and the well-being of coastal communities.
About the MangRes project:
The MangRes project, which began in 2022, seeks to integrate scientific knowledge and local knowledge to advance mangrove restoration, ensuring the participation of all stakeholders involved in these crucial ecosystems. This collaborative approach includes nature-based solutions as fundamental pillars to ensure the sustainability and success of restoration initiatives in the region.
