Synergies among UNESCO Biosphere Reserves along rivers in SEE: a regional expert workshop on Integrated River Basin Management
Biosphere reserves can contribute significantly to the restoration of aquatic ecosystems and integrated water resources management within their territories. Yet, biosphere reserves along rivers are facing shared challenges such as flooding of riverine areas and civil and cultural buildings in proximity, water pollution morphological deterioration of riverbeds and loss of biodiversity.
In this context, the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, together with Po Grande Biosphere Reserve, is organising a workshop titled 鈥淪ynergies among UNESCO Biosphere Reserves along rivers in SEE: a regional expert workshop on integrated River Basin Management,鈥 on 11 December 2024 at Palazzo Madama in Turin, Italy.
Water and river basin experts, biosphere reserve site managers and representatives from National MAB Committees from across South-East Europe will convene in Turin to create synergies and exchange knowledge among the biosphere reserve network in the region. The workshop aims to provide a platform for providing guidelines for a future MAB thematic network dedicated to river basins.
More specifically, the regional workshop will:
- foster the participation of experts, hydrologists, policymakers, Biosphere Reserve representatives and focal points of South-East European Member States to set the scene for a regional network of Biosphere Reserves along river basins;
- collect critical exchanges;
- share knowledge, experience and innovative riverine solutions and strategies;
- serve as a dynamic platform for facilitating partnerships and promoting potential projects and a thematic network.
The regional workshop event which is taking place in a key venue for the Po River and its 5 Biosphere Reserves will be an example of coordinated and integrated River Basin Management.
The current exhibition at Palazzo Madama 鈥鈥 (鈥淐hange! Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. The Po鈥) will inspire discussions and exchanges during the workshop.
