Strengthening capacities in collection of Cultural Statistics for Sustainable Development in Kenya
The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO is leading efforts in sensitizing key stakeholders on cultural indicators, and strengthening national capacities for collecting and using cultural statistics. This project is a priority activity in promoting the cultural and creative industries for sustainable development in Kenya and is being implemented in partnership with UNESCO through the for 2020-2021 biennium.
The initiative will utilize tools advanced through the recently launched framework, developed in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (), international organizations and experts. As a framework of thematic indicators, the Culture|2030 Indicators aims to reap the benefits of UNESCO's unique expertise in collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data in the field of culture, measuring the progress of culture's enabling contribution to the national and local implementation of the and increasing the visibility of culture for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
This project aims to build capacity in bringing together a variety of data sources in Kenya, including from different ministries, public agencies, information systems for culture, national and regional surveys, and professional cultural organizations. It aims to enhance synergies among relevant government agencies, civil society organizations and county cultural officials, and advocate for data collection practices that pay attention to gender equality in skills development. To achieve this goal, KNATCOM has set up a multi-stakeholder national team to spearhead the implementation of this initiative in a participatory way.
The cultural indicators project will hold capacity-building workshops with trainers drawn from experts trained by UNESCO on Culture|2030 Indicators, as well as relevant public institutions. The indicators and statistics gathered will inform policies, decisions and operational actions, enabling more significant investments in the culture sector, and greater recognition of its transversal role across other sectors.
