ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Under the authority of the Director/Head of UNESCO Regional Office For Eastern Africa  & UNESCO Representative and the direct suppervision of the Administrative Officer and, where applicable, in coordination with the Administraive Assistant, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services in support of UNESCO Nairobi Office, ensuring the highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues.

 

MAIN TASKS OR SERVICES

  • Drives the UNESCO staff, officials, visitors and authorized personnel using official/ project vehicles. Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services. Meets official personnel and visitors at the airport and, when required, facilitates basic visa and customs formalities. When necessary, translates in local language for the Head/Director of the Office and/or official personnel using the vehicle. Drives vehicle on field trips, as required.
  • Ensures cost-savings through proper day-to-day use of the assigned vehicle and accurate day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through daily vehicle logs, timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes and water levels and car washing so that the vehicle is kept clean and in good running condition at all times. Provides inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports, etc. Arranges for the vehicle to be inspected and repaired at the officially designated workshop; checks the vehicle prior to and after the workshop visit.  
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle; keeps track of insurance and other tax formalities. Ensures timely, accurate and correct reporting of accidents. Assist on installations and use the HF, VHF radio and satellite phone in the vehicle.  

  • Delivers and collects mail and documents and other items as required. When not driving, may perform other duties, such as photocopying, binding, assisting with filing, paying some office bills etc.

  • Undertakes the duties of other drivers when they are on leave.

     

EXPECTED RESULTS

The work of the Driver affects indirectly on the work of others outside the immediate unit and their safety. Accidents may have fatal consequences. Correct and timely delivery of mail and other documents can also indirectly affect the work of others outside the immediate unit. The timely arrival of staff to meeting places affect the work and the delivery.

 

DURATION OF CONTRACT

This Service Contract is for 10 months, tentatively from 1 March 2025 to 31 December 2025. 

At the discretion of the Sector ADG/ Director/Head of Bureau/ (Field/Liaison) Office/ Institute, SCs may be extended, based on operational needs, satisfactory performance and availability of sufficient funds, for periods of up to and including 12 (twelve) months at a time. The overall cumulative duration of Service Contracts at Headquarters awarded to the same individual shall not exceed 24 months in an uninterrupted period of 36 months.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Academic Qualifications: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

Relevant Work Experience: least 3 years or work experience as a driver in a international organization, embassy or UN system with a safe driving record. Knowledge of local driving rules and regulations, driver protocol and courtesy, and local roads and conditions. Ability to detect minor mechanical problems and skills to undertake minor vehicule repairs. Excellent driving skills on and off the road.

  • Knowledge, Expertise, Skills and Competencies: Good organizational and planning skills, and an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. 

  • Ability to work independently and follow-up effectively on management decisions.

  • Ability to work in a team and coordinate with others. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with proven ability to maintain effective working relations within a multi-cultural environment and with partners outside of the organization.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet tight deadlines.

 

IT Skills: Knowledge of MS software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).

Language Requirements: Excellent knowledge (spoken and written) of English and Swahili.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have valid Driving License (Class B, C, E).

  • Valid driving license free from any current endorsements and valid for any of the classes of vehicles which the Officer is required to drive.

  • Defensive driving certificate from Automobile Association (AA) of Kenya or its equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution.

  • Passed the Suitability Test for Drivers Grade I from the Ministry of Roads and Public Works.

  • A course in First Aid lasting not less than one (1) week from St. John Ambulance or Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized institution.

  • Any other qualifications that may be adjudged as equivalent by the Institution

  • Previous relevant work experience required.

  • At least 3 years鈥 relevant driving experience.

  • Conversant with use of GPS maps.
