Mobile teachers in Myanmar empowered on MIL, bringing their skills to communities in conflict areas
It is in this context that 32 mobile teachers were trained though the Conflict-Sensitive Education (CSE)-focused online course for Mobile Teacher Trainers (MTTs) on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in August 2023. Of the programme鈥檚 32 trainees, 75 percent were women. Upskilling women, especially those working in remote or rural areas, is in line with UNESCO鈥檚 commitment to gender equality.
The course explored topics including hate speech, bias, and discrimination inside learning settings. It offered strategies for identifying representations in the media and online and basic skills in discerning disinformation and misinformation. Most importantly, its CSE approach empowered these educators to better understand the evolving conflict scenario in the country and explore conflict-sensitive teaching practices.
The training was well received by the teachers who, since then, have brought their new skills to learners in remote ethnic villages. In a subsequent feedback session, a teacher expressed their plans to share the knowledge acquired with other colleagues: 鈥淚 think we will forward this information to our relevant staffs in order to have more knowledge of media and information literacy and conflict sensitive education.鈥
The mobile teacher training aims to contribute towards creating safer learning environments and, as a result, more engaged learners. Mr Ichiro Miyazawa, Head of the UNESCO Antenna Office in Yangon believes that the course can be considered a good model on how MIL education can be contextualized in various conflict situations around the world.
The have also been packaged into eLearning materials, inclusive of audiovisual support, and are available on the UNESCO Yangon鈥檚 aiming to increase accessibility to teachers across the country.
The course was conducted within the framework of UNESCO鈥檚 regional project, 鈥楽trengthening Pre-Service Teacher Education in Myanmar鈥 (STEM) and was supported by the Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists.
