Kenyan stakeholders learn how to apply for UNESCO IFCD Fund

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO organized an awareness raising and capacity building workshop from 17 to 18 March 2021 on the and how to apply for the UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity () for stakeholders from the Mount Kenya region in Embu County.

The workshop was led by a Kenyan expert from the UNESCO Expert Facility, Mr. David Waweru, and Ms. Emily Njeru from the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO.

As a key instrument for international cooperation and assistance in implementing the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, the International Fund for Cultural Diversity () aims to promote sustainable development and poverty reduction in developing countries that are Parties to the 2005 Convention. It does so by supporting projects aimed at fostering the emergence of a dynamic cultural sector, notably through activities that facilitate the introduction and/or development of policies and strategies for the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions, and the strengthening of institutional infrastructures to support viable cultural industries.

On 17 March 2021, UNESCO launched its 12th call for IFCD funding requests. This year, IFCD joins the celebration of theby calling for projects aimed at making a significant contribution to the creative economy in developing countries that are parties to the 2005 Convention. All projects shall ultimately contribute to sustainable creative ecosystems and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda of the United Nations.

I would like to congratulate the Kenyan National Commission for UNESCO for the success of this awareness raising and capacity building workshop. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage Kenyans and other East African countries who are party to the 2005 Convention to develop proposals for the IFCD call for applications in order to further develop the creative economy in the Eastern Africa region.
