The National Museum of Indigenous Peoples (MNPI), the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil (MPI), the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (FUNAI) and the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation (FCRB), in cooperation with UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture in Brazil, organized the International Seminar on Indigenous Peoples and Cultural Diversity: Knowledge, Practices and Biodiversity; How to Be Protected for the Future? The event occurs in the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation Auditorium, Rua São Clemente, 134 – Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 8-10 April 2024.

The objective of the Seminar is to discuss the recognition of the rights of Indigenous Peoples over their cultural heritage, especially intellectual property rights over their traditional knowledge, genetic resources, and traditional cultural expressions in the context of the United Nations.

The world’s Indigenous Peoples call for a response to their need to assert the rights of indigenous peoples over their traditional knowledge in the preserved genetic resources present in their territories and their traditional cultural expressions.

Thus, the proposal addresses the challenges to recognizing Indigenous Peoples as authors, inventors, and breeders with the capacity for creation and innovation, continuously using improved technologies in their collective context.

The Seminar aims to bring together Indigenous Peoples from the six Brazilian biomes to hold an Indigenous Caucus and offer support for the Brazilian position at the Diplomatic Conference of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which will be held in Geneva in May 2024.
