Greece’s education responses to the influx of Ukrainian students

Situation

Context

Greece proposed the establishment of an European Action Group to support the education of Ukrainian learners.

Preschool and Basic Education

Ukrainian refugee children are currently being admitted into Greek schools in reception classes where students with minimal or no knowledge of Greek will study for 15 hours a week in intensive Greek language classes. During the remaining hours, students will attend classes in their school regular classroom, for courses where language communication is not primary, such as Physical Education, Music, IT, Foreign Language. Psychologists and social workers will also support refugee students.

The students are registered based on their age, their educational level in Ukraine and their knowledge of the Greek language. In parallel, the instructions of the Institute for Educational Policy for e-learning have also been translated into Ukrainian. 

The Institute of Education Policy is encouraging teachers to explore concepts such as war and peace, conflict prevention, international law, human rights, and solidarity in the classroom, and is supporting teachers by making related teaching resources available.

The EU issued operational guidelines for the implementation of Council implementing Decision 2022/382, establishing the existence of a mass influx of displaced persons from Ukraine within the meaning of Article 5 of Directive 2001/55/EC, and having the effect of introducing temporary protection (2022/C 126 I/01). As such, EU Member States shall grant access to their education system to persons under 18 years old enjoying the temporary protection status under the.
