Ministers and representatives of Ministers from 10 countries in eastern Africa were gathered in the UNESCO Regional Consultation on Cultural Policies for the Africa region, held from 31 January to 1 February 2022, as part of an inclusive and participatory process towards the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies - Mondiacult 2022, which will be convened by the Director General of UNESCO, and to be hosted by the Government of Mexico, from 28 to 30 September 2022.

The consultations involved ministerial-level representation from Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda, regional intergovernmental organizations, academia, civil society organizations, and networks, and addressed key priority areas for shaping a more robust and resilient culture sector in Africa. These included promoting the creative economy and supporting Member States in adopting and effectively implementing their cultural policies to better respond to contemporary challenges and advance the contribution of culture to economic and social development, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The consultation captured regional trends, gaps and challenges, and identified critical priorities with regards to cultural policies and the integration of culture across the public policy agenda. It also captured emerging issues and critical areas for policy engagement in the future and highlighted Member States recommendations to UNESCO and the international community.

From December 2021 through February 2022, five regional consultations (Europe and North America; Asia and the Pacific; Africa; Latin America and the Caribbean; and the Arab States) have been organized in the run-up to MONDIACULT 2022. The Regional Consultation process is inclusive, participatory, priority-focused, and strategic in terms of vision and ambitions. These consultations will play a critical role to map current trends pertaining to cultural policies, notably in the context of the post‐pandemic recovery strategies. They will also help identifying key areas for the adaptation of the cultural sector to address the most pressing challenges of sustainable development and are intended to identify specific priorities of the region that require stronger policy investment, to better harness the contribution of culture across the public policy spectrum.

The UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022 will be convened by UNESCO forty years after the first Mondiacult World Conference on Cultural Policies that was held in Mexico City (Mexico) in 1982, and 24 years after the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies for Development held in Stockholm (Sweden) in 1998.
