The UNESCO EU-funded Transcultura programme publishes a bimonthly newsletter with a list of opportunities available for young cultural professionals in the Caribbean.

The start of the year always brings with it the promise of transformation and new beginnings. A new period unfolds, brimming with projects, hopes and dreams. The Transcultura Connects newsletter, created by the programme offers you opportunities1 that could shape the next chapter of your career in the Cultural and Creative Industries. Whether through training, residencies, grants, research projects, business development or access to markets, this newsletter aims to support the professional growth of young cultural professionals from the Caribbean and to showcase Caribbean talent on global stages.

Cinéma en Construction 44 will take place on 27 and 28 March 2025, as part of the professional platform activities of Cinélatino, Rencontres de Toulouse. This pioneering initiative supports Latin American films in their post-production stage, bringing together cinema professionals who can contribute to the finalization and promotion of the selected films.

The DocsBarcelona Festival is now accepting project submissions for participation in the support, advisory and funding programmes offered by DocsBarcelona Industry, the festival's professional market. From 12 to 16 May 2025, it will once again be the meeting point for the non-fiction professional sector in southern Europe, awarding prizes valued at €15,000.

Transcultura Creative Tourism Workshops (Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines)

The UNESCO Transcultura programme, funded by the European Union, is launching a call for young artists and entrepreneurs in the Caribbean tourism sector to participate in its creative tourism training workshops. Fifty participants will benefit from week-long capacity-building workshops in Saint George, Grenada (from 24 to 28 February 2025) and Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (from 17 to 21 March 2025).

The International Film and Television School (EICTV) of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, invites young people aged 22 to 30 from Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania to participate in the renowned Regular Course for the 2025/2028 edition. Over three years, students will engage in an intensive and comprehensive study programme. The first year offers general training (Polivalencia), while the second and third years focus on the chosen specialization, as indicated on the admission form. Specializations include: Fiction Directing, Documentary Directing, Screenwriting, Production, Sound, Editing and Cinematography.

The Ibero-American Audiovisual Project Development Course (CDPAI) is inviting 20 screenwriters to participate in its next edition, taking place in Madrid from 29 September to 7 November 2025. This six-week course is open to authors from countries within the Ibero-American community of nations who are developing feature film or series projects in fiction, documentary, or animation.

BIRCA eco Matter is a joint residency of two weeks for six international performing artists, who seek to create new solo, shared and collaborative performance works. The residency addresses interconnectivity through the ecology of environment, of social justice, of spirit and intellectual dimensions. By embracing the natural surroundings of BIRCA, the residency wants to create a vision for a regenerative future that nourishes intersection, communication, generosity and sharing as modes of being and creating.

The Bernard Grau Foundation-Académie des beaux-arts, which aims to support and promote the vitality of the Cuban artistic scene, is partnering with the Cité internationale des arts to establish a residency programme for Cuban artists. The call for applications is open to Cuban composers and choreographers.

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts runs a residency programme called 2—12, open to applications from all artistic disciplines (visual arts, performing arts, music, cinema and writing). Bora Bora Residency Centre is calling for applications from professional artists working in the field of dance and choreography to undertake a residency between 1 August 2025 and 30 June 2026, in Aarhus (the second city of Denmark) or one of their Danish partners. Five projects will be selected and invited for a residency at Bora Bora Residency Centre. As Bora Bora Residency Centre receives funding from Danish foundations, at least two of the five projects must be initiated by Danish artists or artists based in Denmark.

SAC International Curatorial Residency Programme 2025 is the residency programme at Barcelona’s Sant Andreu Contemporani, co-produced with Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB), in collaboration with Fabra i Coats - Fàbrica de Creació de Barcelona, available to international curators. As part of the programme, an open call for proposals is being announced to choose an international curator who will be part of the Miquel Casablancas Prize for the Visual Arts’ jury in 2025 and will later develop a curatorial project with a selection of Catalan artists chosen from applicants to the prize.

Funding is available for professional musicians, as well as amateurs and novices, and ensembles from developing and transitioning countries, who are invited to participate in music projects in Germany. A prerequisite for funding is an invitation and application from collaborators in Germany. The music project must include at least three events (concerts, workshops, panels, etc.). Funding applications for international music projects must be received at least three months before the project start date.

The Art centre offers residencies for foreign artists who would like to stay and work at the Art centre or Artists’ Asylum. During their residency, artists are given the opportunity to engage with the social network of Art centre and local community, research and produce artworks, present their work and build networks with the Slovene arts community. The duration of residencies is not limited and is determined on a project-by-project basis, with ongoing conversations throughout a residency. Residencies to date have lasted from few days up to a year.

TRANSCULTURA OPPORTUNITY!

Music

(Dominican Republic)

ProPiano Caribe is a regional piano competition with the aim of promoting the talent and creativity of young people with a passion for the piano and promising careers, organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the Dominican Republic, in collaboration with Fundación Sinfonía and the Transcultura Programme. The jury will select three finalists through virtual auditions, who will be invited to travel to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for the final round before a jury of international experts, as well as for the closing concert on 17 and 18 March 2025.

The LOOP Design Awards 2025 aims to celebrate the best in Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Product Design, Architecture Photography, Architecture Video, Concept, Art and Travel, with more than 145 award categories created. The LOOP Design Awards is divided into four registration deadlines, allowing submissions at the most convenient times.

The Royal Caribbean Artist Discovery Program spotlights up-and-coming local artists, showcasing their creativity, talent and culture to the millions of guests that sail with the cruise line each year. Four artists will be selected to come aboard and create a large-scale mural in one of four marquee locations on Star of the Seas, before the ship sets sail in the Caribbean in August 2025.

Puchi Award seeks to reward the most free, brilliant and innovative book proposals in the graphic field: comics and illustrated albums. The award aims to give visibility to works of great quality and originality. The winner will receive a prize of €10,000 (VAT and other taxes included, as an advance payment for the publishing rights of the work), plus the publication of the work, which will be distributed by Fulgencio Pimentel. Exceptionally, a Special Jury Prize may be awarded, which will involve the publication and distribution of the winning project.

RIDCC invites choreographers from around the globe to submit their duets (7 to 12 mins) for the seventh edition of the duet competition, taking place from 11 to 14 June 2025, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The sixteen participants will present their duets live in the theatre to the audience in Rotterdam and through the livestream all over the world.

Artists who self-identify as belonging to a national, ethnic, religious or linguistic minority are invited to apply to the 2025 Edition of the International Contest for Minority Artists. All artworks focusing on themes related to minority rights, belonging, environmental justice and climate change are eligible, including but not limited to photography, painting, video, installation, drawing, sculpture, digital arts, dancing, music, etc. Due to practical reasons, it is however required that a presentation of the artwork(s) be submitted in a digital format.

The Prix Ars Electronica is the world’s longest-running media art competition. With the award-winning works of international artists as a trend barometer, it offers an inspiring, current and forward-looking insight into the interface between art, technology and society. The winners can look forward to the coveted Golden Nicas, up to €10,000 per category and a prominent appearance at the renowned Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.

Cinema 

The Caribbean International Film and Environment Festival, Isla Verde, founded in 2022 by Cuban actor, director and National Film Award winner (2024) Jorge Perugorría, announces its third edition, which will take place on the Isle of Youth from 6 to 12 April 2025. The festival maintains its competitive nature, bringing together feature and short films with narratives that promote the conservation and protection of the environment and document the active relationship between humans and nature. The call for entries is open for the general competition as well as the ‘Cinema in Construction’ section. The Transcultura programme will fund the participation of three selected Caribbean filmmakers.

The Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) and the Governments of Holguín and Gibara invite you to participate in the nineteenth edition of the International Festival of Low-Budget Cinema of Gibara (FICGIBARA), taking place from April 15 to 19, 2025Celebrated as a multicultural event and a festival for all the arts, with a focus on cinemathe festival welcomes submissions of cinematic works from any nationality, provided they are presented in their original language with Spanish subtitles and completed between 2023 and the submission deadline for this call.

Set up in 1998 to unveil emerging talent, La Cinef picks 15 to 20 short and medium-length films every year, made by young directors at film schools around the world. Previously called Cinéfondation, the name of the selection has changed in 2022 to LA CINEF, but its mission remains the same.

Altofest is a systemic live performance by Teatringestazione, extended in time and space, shared in the form of a festival with a heterogeneous collectivity, made up of artists, citizens and residents, researchers, scholars and experts in the cultural sphere, conscious and occasional spectators. Teatringestazione composes the dramaturgy of Altofest by combining the proposals received through the call for proposals with the domestic spaces and its inhabitants, giving rise to a collective action spread across different parts of the city. Professional artists can apply worldwide without distinction among nationality, country of residence, language or age. The artists are invited for an artistic residency to process the selected work.

(Slovenia)

The Kranj Foto Fest seeks visually powerful and thought-provoking stories. Submissions can include documentary photography, fine art photography and any other form of contemporary photography that explores the theme in a meaningful and impactful way. Each year, the jury will select one winner who receives a €1,000 cash prize and has a solo exhibition in Kranj, Slovenia, during the festival. A shortlist of photographers is also selected for group exhibitions all around the alpine town of Kranj.

DocsValencia Espai de No Ficció will hold its ninth edition from 9 to 17 May 2025. Through competitive and non-competitive sections, it will showcase the best of local, national and international production, competing for various awards granted by the jury.

SMACH is a public art project born in 2012. It is a biennial open-air exhibition that represents the combination of ‘art and nature’. The Biennale takes place in 10 locations selected for their historical, mythological, botanical and geological characteristics that are located along a 65-kilometer stretch. SMACH Biennale looks for project proposals for artistic, sculptural and installation interventions.

The Bahamas International Film Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the local community and international visitors with a diverse presentation of films from around the world. In addition to offering films that might not otherwise be released theatrically in the Bahamas, BIFF will provide a unique cultural experience, educational programmes and forums to explore the future of cinema.

An international call for film submissions that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in their creative processes, exploring their aesthetic, narrative, ethical and political possibilities and implications. In its third edition, the +RAIN Film Festival invites directors to present and discuss their works in public screenings. An international jury will select the most innovative films to also be showcased at Sónar+D.

The Larnaca Biennale is the biggest and most popular international art and culture event in Cyprus. In addition to the main exhibition, the Biennial hosts a series of artistic and cultural events in the city such as concerts, theatre, performances, lectures and workshops. Participation is open to all artists, professionals or amateurs, art students, designers and photographers who are 18 years old or above.

Transforme is a programme initiated by the Hermès Corporate Foundation. Its support is provided through: – production assistance, granted to the producer of the show (company or delegated producer) – and/or co-programming carried out with the cultural institutions partnering with the programme, with whom the performance dates are decided. Selected shows may be offered performance dates with one or more of the partners.

Cinema

Ibermedia is a programme that encourages the co-production and co-development of fiction films and series, documentaries and animations in Ibero-America. The call for 2025 opens on 17 January with the new addition of a support fund for the distribution, circulation and exhibition of Ibero-American films. This new fund complements the traditional support lines for the co-development and co-production of feature films and series, as well as training programmes for filmmakers and audiovisual professionals.

This subsidy is for programming special foreign performances and concerts in the Netherlands. The aim is to stimulate international quality and diversity in the performing arts in the Netherlands, and the applicant must be a legal entity established in the Netherlands.

We support music projects in Germany involving artists and ensembles from developing and transition countries. An invitation and application from collaborators in Germany are a prerequisite for funding. These grants are for professional ensembles and performing artists as well as amateur and newcomer ensembles.

RESEARCH GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

(Jamaica)

The Caribbean Digital Scholarship Collective (CDSC) invites applications for a week-long residential digital humanities institute, to be held at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, in June 2025. The CDSC supports the growth and development of digital humanities scholarship, training and infrastructure for the Caribbean and its diasporas. The Caribbean Digital Scholarship summer institute (CDSsi) will train scholars, at all levels, working at the intersections of Caribbean Studies and digital humanities. Thanks to a generous Mellon Foundation grant, the CDSC will be able to cover travel and accommodations for fellows selected for participation in the summer institute.

(Luxembourg)

Working as part of the collection and wider curatorial team, the role of Curatorial Research Fellow will be dedicated to the development of the collection through the museum’s partnership with the international law firm, Allen & Overy Shearman. The research will focus on contemporary art globally with a specific interest in moving image and new technologies. The successful candidate will contribute ideas and support proposals for acquisitions and may also work on the development of collection displays.

Audiovisual and media 

(Germany)

The Foundation of Lower Saxony grant at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art supports a wide spectrum of media art, from video art and net-based projects to audio works and audio-visual installations. Each of the three grants is awarded to produce a new project in media art. The grant is valid for a duration of six months (July to December). It cannot be prolonged, and residency is compulsory; grant recipients can expect to stay in Oldenburg for at least one month.

In this twenty-fifth edition, 735 scholarships are offered across all areas of knowledge, distributed in the following categories: 227 postgraduate scholarships, 121 doctoral and short postdoctoral stay scholarships, 110 renewals of doctoral scholarships, 22 faculty mobility scholarships and 255 institutional study scholarships. The call includes a total of 198 academic programmes, based on criteria of excellence and relevance to the current societal challenges.

The Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding wishes to promote contemporary art in Denmark and Danish contemporary art abroad by allowing foreign curators to meet Danish artists and gain insight into the Danish contemporary art scene with a view to future collaborations. Funding (travel and accommodation) is available for curatorial research for curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals.
