UNESCO Kathmandu office in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST) and supported by UNESCO Bangkok organized a 5-day Customized training of trainers Program on Information and Communications Technology-ICT in Kathmandu from 22-26 November 2022.
In 2019, building on already existing ICT teacher-training courses, the National Center for Educational Development (NCED) under Nepal鈥檚 Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, enhanced the 鈥楤asic鈥 level course to align it with the Basic level of the national curriculum. However, there are still several remaining gaps which were identified for further improvement. Furthermore, the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD) aims to expand the module development to target the 鈥淧roficient鈥 level of the curriculum. Additionally, due to the education disruption caused by COVID-19, standardized and foundational teacher ICT training programmes were needed to support the shift towards remote and online learning modalities. In this regard, UNESCO supported MOEST/CEHRD in developing and validating a 5-day teacher training module based on the ICT-CST, national curricula, and previously drafted ICT modules.
I appreciate the teachers for bringing the level of education to this point even through times of crisis. We can鈥檛 assure you that such times won't come again and training such as this is imperative to remain prepared. This kind of training will help our teachers to further enhance their capacities and continue their work. There are several plans for the future, and I am sure the trainers who have gained the required knowledge and skills here will be able to support us in achieving our planned objectives.
The core aim of this training is to offer immediate response/support to teachers to adapt to alternative teaching/learning and self-learning methods, esp. during emergencies. The training was intended for Primary to Secondary level teachers teaching in community schools in Nepal.
During the training, the teachers enhanced their knowledge on
- The terms used in ICT in education and their use in the global context as well as in Nepal
- Use of different ICT/digital tools/applications for conducting teaching/learning even in the situation of pandemic/disasters.
- Collection, selection and sharing and use of appropriate available resources from different authentic digital sources;
- Using different digital tools and providing real time feedback
- Using ICT safely, securely, and equitably in the teaching and learning processes
I am very pleased with this training. Programs such as this must be organized often. It is an absolute necessity for us to learn about IT-friendly teaching and learning methods in this era and to make our students confident in the global market. I am grateful to UNESCO for organizing this program which will ultimately improve the quality of education in Nepal.
